DAY 1:ഀ Addressing the communication challenge to facilitate the mainstreaming ofഀ biodiversity into business



1.    ഀ Non-movement of consumers towardsഀ becoming green is a big challenge for brands in meeting theirഀ sustainability targets.

2.    ഀ This is also a challenge for theഀ sustainability movement as a whole because it represents a lack of returnഀ on investment for companies.

3.    ഀ Investing in communications is a vitalഀ aspect to any transformation process.

NCPC-SA initiated aഀ programme called Gauteng Industrial Symbiosis Programme (GISP) to exploreഀ new opportunities and implement innovative   technologies toഀ unlock the potential of underutilised resources. The GISP Businessഀ Opportunity Workshop is an opportunity for companies withഀ underutilised resources to exchange resources within companies,ഀ industries, research and development agencies and local universities thatഀ will utilise them as input materials. UN Finalizes 2030ഀ Agenda for Sustainable Development. The final version ofഀ the draft post-2015 development agenda, titled ‘Transforming our World:ഀ The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,' was adopted by acclamationഀ at the conclusion of an informal plenary of intergovernmentalഀ negotiations. The adoption has concluded a seven-month process to agreeഀ on the UN's development agenda to follow up on the Millennium Developmentഀ Goals (MDGs) and seek to achieve sustainable development. The Worldഀ Conservation Congress 2016 issues a call for contributions. Everyഀ four years, the IUCN World Conservation Congress brings togetherഀ thousands of decision-makers from government, civil society, business andഀ academia.  "Planet at the crossroads" is the theme of theഀ next Congress, which will be held in Hawai'i, and a public Forum willഀ take place from 2-5 September. The Indianഀ Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IBBI), together with theഀ Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, released aഀ publication titled Bridging Business and Biodiversity: Innovativeഀ Approaches on 22 May 2015. The publication highlights the concept ofഀ natural capital and its relation with biodiversity and ecosystem servicesഀ and the best practices of IBBI signatories. The Naturalഀ Capital and Climate Policy Project is centred around four thematicഀ reports, which are produced by teams of experts, both academics andഀ practitioners. The four main reports are based on existing analyses,ഀ strategies and case studies that highlight the importance of naturalഀ services for human wellbeing in Germany. To read more clickഀ here.

The CBD mandated Biodiversityഀ Indicators Partnership a global initiative to promote and coordinateഀ the development and delivery of biodiversity indicators in support of theഀ CBD, Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEA), the Intergovernmentalഀ Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES),ഀ national and regional governments and a range of other sectors. "In-depthഀ Report Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity" published by theഀ European Commission. How do biodiversity and ecosystem services interact?ഀ In May, a new report on that matter was published on behalf of theഀ European Commission. In Good Company 2015 isഀ the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) International’s annual globalഀ platform to engage with leading companies, brands and international NGOsഀ working strategically with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR),ഀ sustainability and FSC. The event will take place in Durban, South Africaഀ from 3-5 September 2015. For more information click here..


The XIV Worldഀ Forestry Congress, 7-11 September 2015, to be held in Durban, Southഀ Africa, will bring together the global forestry community to review andഀ analyse the key issues and to share ways of addressing them. For moreഀ information clickഀ here.


The Pan-Africanഀ Business and Biodiversity Forum will take place 9th-10th October 2015 inഀ Accra, Ghana. This landmark forum aims to promote increasedഀ sustainability within Africa’s development agenda through mainstreamingഀ of natural capital, and improved business-civil society cooperation. The 8th Worldഀ Ecosystem Services Partnership conference will be held in South Africaഀ from 9-13 November 2015. The central theme isഀ ‘Ecosystem Services for Nature, People and Prosperity’. The conferenceഀ will pay special attention to the public and private sector dialogue onഀ how the ecosystem services concept can be used to support conservation,ഀ improve livelihoods and engage the business community. The 2015ഀ Convention for Biological Diversity Business and Biodiversity Forum:ഀ Practices, Solutions and the Way Forward (which will also encompassഀ the 5th Meeting of the Global Partnership for Business and Biodiversity)ഀ will take place from 11-12 November 2015 in Helsinki, Finland.
