So...what is the EWT doing about it ? The rhino poaching crisis has demonstrated that there is no single solution to addressing illegal wildlife trade, which is an increasing global phenomenon, estimated to be the third largest illegal industry worldwide after drugs and human trafficking, and often has its roots in organised, trans-boundary crime. For this reason the EWT is implementing interventions at several stages in the poaching and wildlife trade chain, which has a number of role players:

Poaching is considered to be a “low risk - high reward” activity. For a South African NGO such as EWT, it is more feasible to focus on activities which elevate the RISK associated with poaching rather than to reduce the REWARD. These interventions (which are selected from within our means and capacity and which fit our conservation remit) tackle various points in the poaching chain, and form the core of the EWT Rhino Project.
