| BIODIVERSITY AND WATER – ARE WE DOING ENOUGH? |
| |
| |
Much of South Africa’s biodiversity is under severe threat and none more so than those elements associated with the country’s water resources. South Africa, currently categorised as a water-stressed country, is forecasted to experience physical water scarcity by the year 2025. With the trends in population growth and its attributes, and the ongoing pollution of our available water sources, there is bound to be increased pressure on the available water probably resulting in increased conflict over its allocation and a further stress on this resource leading to scarcity.

| ORIBI SURVEY INDICATES HOPE FOR THREATENED ANTELOPE. |
| |
| |
The Oribi (Ourebia ourebi) is a highly specialised antelope inhabiting African temperate grasslands. In South Africa, their numbers have declined sharply in recent years, and they now exist in only a few formally protected areas where they may resist the impact of mankind’s activities, with the bulk of Oribi occurring on privately-owned land. South Africa’s latest Red Data Book for Mammals (2004) classifies the Oribi as “Endangered”, due to its rapid decline in recent years, caused primarily by habitat destruction and continued persecution by man.

| THE ENDANGERED WILDLIFE TRUST SCHOOL FUNDRAISING INITIATIVES |
| |
| |
The EWT is inviting schools to take action and become more aware of their environment. By getting children to discover more about their environment and organisations working to conserve their natural heritage, children will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and explore their attitudes to environmental issues. The EWT has started a new schools campaign which offers two options to schools to support the environment. Schools can sign up for membership for as little a R299 per annum. This entitles them to receive our quarterly magazines and monthly electronic newsletters. Thanks to Dainfern College for being the first school to sign !

CELEBRATE NATIONAL WATER WEEK FROM 27 TO 31 MARCH 2006 |
| |
| |
The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry today announced that National Water Week will be celebrated from 27 to 31 March 2006, a week later than it was originally scheduled. National Water Week is a significant awareness campaign of the Department and it serves as a powerful mechanism to popularise the importance of water to the general public and to the general water stakeholder group. It creates a platform for the Department and other relevant stakeholders to communicate important water messages to the public.

COMMUNITIES AND CONSERVATION (THE MAKULEKE AS A CASE STUDY). |
| |
| |
Date: 11 April 2006
Time: 18:30 – 19:00
Venue: The Country Club Johannesburg , Napier Road, Auckland Park.
Our guest speaker in April is Andre van Zyl, the Working Group Manager for the Conservation Leadership Group of the Endangered Wildlife Trust. Andre will be presenting on the Makuleke Training Project (MTP).
In September 1969 the Makuleke tribe, part of the Shangaan people, were forcibly removed by the South African government from 24,000 hectares of the fertile Pafuri region of the Kruger National Park, where they had been living off the land for decades. Following South Africa’s democratic elections of 1994, the land Restitution Act made it possible for the Makuleke to enter a claim for their land.

Tips on Saving Water in the home; |
| |
| • |
Don’t leave a tap running while you brush your teeth |
| • |
Fix those leaky toilet and taps! |
| • |
Take shorter showers |
| • |
Use a broom, not a hose, to clear leaves from your driveway |
| • |
Fill a bowl of water to clean vegetables, instead of rinsing them under a running tap |
| |
| |
When out: |
| |
| • |
Don’t waste water just because someone else is footing the bill, such as at restaurants and hotels |

70% of the earths surface is covered with water, but of this approximately 97% is salt water the remaining 3% is fresh water |
| • |
Of the 3% less than 1% is available for life on earth whilst the rest is in the form of ice at the poles |
| • |
SA receives an annual rainfall of 492 mm which is nearly ½ he earth’s average |
| • |
SA experiences alternating periods of drought and floods which affects the amount of water across the country. Hot and dry conditions result in a high evaporation rate |
