Earth Day is celebrated across the globe on the 22nd of April - for many a stark reminder that we have but one planet Earth. And if we don't get our act together and take the steps needed to conserve our environment, the legacy we leave for the next generation is not going to be the wondrous diversity we enjoy today. Whether it's something as simple as changing to more energy efficient lighting in your home or starting a recycling initiative in your area, the time is now. We cannot afford to be blase nor ignorant about the impact we have on the world we live in. Take a stand, make a difference and celebrate Earth Day in full knowledge that we are doing something about preserving it. - The Editor |
The Endangered Wildlife Trust's Riverine Rabbit Working Group (EWT-RRWG) has established an indigenous nursery in the Northern Cape town of Loxton, in conjunction with the local community. The objective of the nursery is to propagate indigenous riparian shrubs for re-vegetation of the heavily degraded riparian zones in the Great and Upper Karoo region. The nursery has the additional benefit of providing employment and training to women from the local previously disadvantaged community.

The South African NGO Pesticide Network is made up of eleven participating and four corresponding NGOs who have an interest in the responsible management of pesticides. The Endangered Wildlife Trust's (EWT) Wildlife Conflict Prevention Group (WCPG) was elected in July 2007 to facilitate the NGO involvement in the African Stockpiles project.

A telephone helpline has been established to help urbanites manage their gardens in an environmentally responsible way and to encourage beneficial wildlife in gardens. This is a project of the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s (EWT) Wildlife Conflict Prevention Group (WCPG), in collaboration with the well known garden company Kirchhoffs. The Kirchhoffs Garden Protection Information Line 072 952 2552 will be operated by the Endangered Wildlife Trust during office hours from 6 March 2008.

Making compost is the ideal way to slim your bin, and create a nutrient-rich conditioner for your plants. The ideal compost bin is easily accessible, has no gaps in the sides and may be insulated with cardboard or straw and has a lid or cover. The compost bin should be located: in a sunny or semi-shaded position, directly on the soil or turf and away from water-courses.
What you can compost:
- Anything that was once living will compost, but some items are best avoided. Meat, dairy and cooked food can attract vermin and should not be home-composted.
- For best results, use a mixture of types of ingredient. The right balance is something learnt by experience, but a rough guide is to use equal amounts by volume of greens and browns.
- Some things, like grass mowings and soft young weeds, rot quickly. They work as 'activators', getting the composting started, but on their own will decay to a smelly mess.
- Older and tougher plant material is slower to rot but gives body to the finished compost - and usually makes up the bulk of a compost heap. Woody items decay very slowly; they are best chopped or shredded first, where appropriate.
When the ingredients you have put in your container have turned into a dark brown, earthy smelling material, the composting process is complete. It is then best left for a month or two to 'mature' before it is used.

- Cell-phones (second hand or new)
- Solar panels
- 3G cards
- Printers and/or fax machines
- A computer
Our field workers often work in hard conditions with very basic equipment so they get extremely excited when we can supply them with additional equipment to make their lives easier and more efficient.
