  Position: SENIOR FIELD OFFICER VACANCY – LOXTON (NORTHERN CAPE)
  Job Criteria: Position title: Senior Field Officer
Department: Riverine Rabbit Working Group

Purpose of the position: To participate in Working Group activities and develop, oversee and support the implementation of the Habitat Management Programme’s various projects relating to riparian habitat rehabilitation and supervision of the Karoo indigenous nursery based in Loxton (Northern Cape).

Qualification: Minimum M.Sc in Ecology, Botany, Conservation Biology OR a tertiary diploma in, soil conservation and land rehabilitation, and at least 2-3 years post graduate experience in the working environment. Competencies required:
  • A proven track record in habitat rehabilitation/restoration research and field work.
  • Experience propagating indigenous plants will be an advantage.
  • Experience in presenting results of conservation research to landowners, as well as publishing in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Must be able to demonstrate good supervisory and communication skills.
  • A high level of competency with Microsoft Office. Competency in GIS software packages (ArcGIS 9.x, and/or ArcView 3.x.) will be advantageous.
  • High degree of self-motivation and pro-activity, excellent administrative skills, excellent organisation skills, and the proven ability to work under pressure.
  • The ability to develop strong relationships with the private sector, conservation/environmental organisations, governmental agencies, staff and volunteers.
  • Excellent report-writing skills for a variety of audiences including the general public, conservation practitioners and the scientific community.
  • Valid Southern African driver’s licence.

  • Self-motivated, disciplined, innovative and energetic.

  • Fluency in at least English and Afrikaans.

  • Key performance areas: The EWT-RRWG Senior Field Officer reports to the EWT-RRWG Manager and is responsible for the coordination of the EWT-RRWG’s Riparian Habitat Rehabilitation Project by: planning and implementing rehabilitation; supervising and supporting the EWT-RRWG nursery staff; managing and directing the project in line with the EWT Strategic Objectives; liaising and networking within the general public and the broader conservation community both in South Africa and the region; and, developing and coordinating the project’s fund-raising strategies.       Position: Wildlife & Energy Programme – Field Officer
      Job Criteria: The Endangered Wildlife Trust seeks to appoint a Field Officer to join its Wildlife & Energy Programme. This group is primarily responsible for addressing the interaction between wildlife and electrical infrastructure in South Africa.

    Position title: Field Officer
    Department: Wildlife & Energy Programme (WEP)
    Purpose of the position: To assist the Project Manager in fulfilling all necessary activities of the Eskom – EWT Strategic Partnership – a project of the WEP.
    Qualification: The preferred candidate will be in possession of a suitable tertiary qualification in the biological sciences, have an excellent knowledge of birds and other relevant wildlife, and a thorough understanding of ecological principles.

    Competencies required:
    • Conservation experience (particularly outside of protected areas) is an advantage.
    • Exemplary administrative, organisational, communication (including public speaking) and writing skills in English are also required (proof of writing ability will be requested for short listed candidates).
    • Fluency in other South African languages is an advantage.
    • A passion for the environment and birds in particular is required.
    • The preferred candidate will be computer literate in the full MS Office suite.
    • The candidate must be in possession of a valid South African driver’s licence.
    • The candidate must be in possession of a licenced vehicle, preferably high clearance.
    Interpersonal skills:
    • Self-motivated, disciplined, innovative and energetic.
    • This position requires a mature, highly professional person with an ability to operate effectively both as a team member and independently. The ability to work under pressure is essential; this is a deadline driven project.
    • Excellent communication and networking skills.
    • Fluency in English and at least one other South African language.
    • This position requires extensive travel within SA, the candidate should be prepared to travel extensively and spend nights away from home.

    Key performance areas: The position entails primarily assisting the Project Manager with the investigation, tracking and mitigation wildlife interactions associated with existing transmission and distribution electrical infrastructure. The candidate will also be required to participate in other EWT activities as required, including research, training, education and awareness, and advocacy. The Field Officer will work within an established Programme and be a team player, reporting to the Project Manager.
