Heart Song for Africa

A poem by Pat Whitfield
2008

I wake to the sounds of Africa
A goat bleating
Cattle stirring in the kraal
A women sweeping at her door
These sing the heartsongs of homeChildren calling, herding cattle on a path
Aloes spiked on the morning ridge
Where the dew catches the early sunM’thlaba wetu?  It is my land
And my heart sings the heartsongs
Of where the shadows of my sons grew tall
On the sun-white beaches
And the wind which carries the laughter
Of my little girl
And where the shadow of his wing still
Brushes the krantzes that edge the seaI hear again the heartsong with singing names
Kobonqaba, Nxaxo, Cebe, Gqunqui, Xora
Then there’s the Shixini, Nqabarana, Nqabara
M’Pame m’Bashee, m’Thatha
M’gazana, Mgasi and the Umzimvubu
Hluleka, Umzikaba and the Umtamvuna
These sing the songs of a wild and lonely coastMpangeles and nkwalis running
Through the yellow grass
Sing again the summer song of the sun
Of sunbaked earth and blazing heat
In the song of the emerald spotted wood-dove
In the kudu’s dusty snort
Hear the bushveld singing, singingA rhino crashing thro’ the bush
A giraffe elegantly plucking leaves
In the drumming hooves of buffalo
A lion panting in the orange sun
The bushveld sings the songs of hot summer daysTill the sun drops and night falls
Waking the shuffling hyena and the jackal chorus
With the grunt of an ingwe
Jumping down from his tree
The sad call of the nightjar
The shuddering roar of the lion
Build the tension of the bushveld nightFrom Africa came the songs of the Early Dawn
When man first walked upon the earth singing with the children of the sun: Impala, Kudu, Nyala
Time when man first sang the hunting songs
And painted the eland-spirits on his roofAnd at night in the dream-time
I dream of Mapungubwe Mountains
Where the jackal-headed man
Sand the secret songs of the Golden RhinoMoving through the spiky grass
The San hunters still sing the hunting songs
To the gemsbuck and the lion
Where the winds blow the orange sand
They sing the desert songs of the NamibThe city wakes to the surly roar
Cars, taxis jockeying, discordant with noise
Rushing, rushing – no time to sing
Until the worksongs find harmony with the city beat
And the long day clatters on to its closeUnder the city lights the night wakes
To the tarmac’s vibrant beat
Township jazz, fatcats gliding
Pantsula songs, hip-hop and gumboot stomping
And music blasting
For our people are singing, singing
Searching, searching for the soul songs of AfricaOn Karoo plains crisp with frost
And edged with hills of cobalt
On the randjies where the cold winds blow
Echo the songs of the shepherd still herding his sheepAcross stretches of yellow grass
Among herds of quit cattle grazing
I hear the soft song of the lonely veldHere are those who love the land
Waiting in the sunlight beneath the burning sky
Listening for the sound of thunder
And the drum of rain upon the land
In the song of the wind
And the beat of the rain
In the drip of mist off the majaji palms
In the singing of the grass
I hear the rain songs of AfricaFor the Lord cherishes the men who love the soil
For their hearts sing the song of growing things
Of mealie leaves rustling on the lands
Of the sound of wind in the grass
For theirs is the harvest song
Giving quiet thanks for the bounty of the earthIn valleys held by purple mountains
Gabled houses look out
Where wine and burgundy patchwork
With the Riesling green
I hear the song of the vineyards
Pickers who sing and
Wine makers who bottle the songs of the vineIn strutting varnival rhythms
The vibrant Kaapse Klopse parade
For our people are jiving out
The joy-songs of the CapeBelow the blue mountain
The city rocks to the sound of the sea
In the blast of the wind in rigging and sail
I hear the heartsongs of the men
Who challenge the seaAnd always, always my heart sings
Of the aching beauty of this land
And in my deepest soul
Quicken the quiet song
Singing, singing the songs of homeAnd in the evening I dream of rain
On ngwenye trees
Of walking through herds of painted cattle
Looking to he who owns the stars
To sing the Ikwezi song to the evening sky

Happy birthday Mazda Wildlife Fund!

The EWT, proudly supported by, and supporting the Mazda Wildlife Fund, wishes them a happy 20th birthday!

Support for the EWT's IT4 Conservation Programme

Information Security Architects (ISA) has supported the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) since January 2006.  Being ideally positioned to partner with companies who are serious about protecting their e-business investment, ISA has taken their responsibilities one step further to incorporate the protection of the environment through their ongoing support of the EWT. The EWT's mission is to conserve threatened species and ecosystems in southern Africa to the benefit of all people. The EWT IT 4 Conservation Programme's computer and network resources support this mission by providing state-of-the-art IT resources, innovative technologies, and an array of IT services and support.  For example, the EWT Knowledge Management System which provides a centralised storage location for all ecological and spatial information within the EWT, and its numerous partners. The development of a database to record and share ecological datasets is critical for strengthening global conservation decision-making for both the EWT as well as other associated users. The collation of data and monitoring of trends in populations will assist both the individual Programmes of the EWT in the assessment and management of the conservation status of key threatened species, as well as the wider organisation in identifying strategic conservation needs and risks. Collated and accessible data are also needed for organisations to report against various biodiversity indicators such as the 2010 Indicators.

Recycling initiative boosts the EWT.

There are many different ways to support the EWT’s cause. Cape-based initiative ProjectPlus, led by Managing Director Paul Christison, generates additional income for us, while at the same time reducing the corporate carbon footprint, by collecting ink cartridges for recycling.  Thanks to his ongoing efforts, 200 companies have joined the initiative in the past three months.

If you are interested in signing up, the new national number is 086 11 33 421. Paul can also be contacted at info@helpus2help.com.

Paul does personal collections from businesses across the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal. Sister company, Corporate Collections,  covers Polekwane, Witbank, Sasolburg, Pretoria and the greater Johannesburg region along with the northern suburbs, Midrand, East Rand, Roodepoort and Randburg.

The programme is for desktop printers, fax lasers and inkjet cartridges. Original Hewlett Packard, Canon, Lexmark and Samsung products are preferable and while some are not refillable or saleable, most can be recycled.

Cartridges are sorted through before being sold to the different manufacturers who in turn refurbish the cartridges to different specifications. These are then sold as remanufactured, refilled or compatible printer cartridges. EIther way, they are kept out of landfills and fewer toxins enter the ground.

Thank-you to Chantelle Guise-Brown.
https://www.ewt.org.za/images/support/ewt-donation-receipt.jpg
Chantelle Guise-Brown is thanked by Olga Nyabereka for a donation of R1 800 to the EWT. Chantelle asked friends and family to donate money in lieu of giving her birthday presents earlier in 2009. Chantelle is wild about wildlife and this is the second such donation that she has made. Her generosity is inspirational. Thank-you!Donation in memoriam
The EWT had received a donation in Memory of Phyl Beaumont.Phyl will be greatly missed by Roger, Arddy and Wendy. With our love to Rod, Mike and their familiesThank you to Dill Wright for her donation
Dill Wright, a long standing, loyal member of the Endangered Wildlife Trust, recently celebrated a “special” Birthday.  Rather than have people spend money on her, Dill requested that her friends make a donation to her favourite NGO -  the EWT.  Dill we hope you had a wonderful day and would like to thank you for your continued support and very generous gesture.https://www.ewt.org.za/images/wright.jpgIn memory of Eric Pfaff
Recently the EWT received the following letter from Susan Pfaff.  “My husband Eric Pfaff, who grew up in South Africa, died in London earlier this month after a battle with cancer.  He greatly admired the work of the Endangered Wildlife Trust and always had one of your stickers on the windscreen of his car.  My children and I have suggested that instead of sending flowers, donations in his memory could be made to the EWT.  He had a particular interest in leopards and raptor birds. With thanks and I hope that we can visit one of your projects in the future.”
