The coalition of civil society organisations challenging the authorisations given to mining company Limpopo Coal (Pty) Ltd’s proposed Vele colliery outside the Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site, has resolved to commence direct formal negotiations with Limpopo Coal and its holding company Coal of Africa (CoAL). |

The NGO Coalition views the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs’ decision to uplift the suspension of the Vele water use licence as very worrying. We also regard the Minister’s decision as premature, since her own Department has not even given written reasons for its decision to issue the water use licence in the first place. |

The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) have formed a partnership that will see both parties combine forces for conservation in 2012. The partnership was kicked off on Saturday 8 October 2011 with the Absa Currie Cup match between the MTN Golden Lions and DHL Western Province, at Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg. The Golden Lions won 42-25, thus earning themselves a place in the semi-finals. |

World Rhino Day is celebrated on 22 September each year and aims to raise public awareness about the illegal trade in rhino horn and global rhino conservation issues. This year, World Rhino Day will focus on debunking the myths around rhino horn containing any curative properties, and reducing the demand for rhino horn (download our Fact Sheet on Rhino Dehorning at www.ewt.org.za). |

In recognising the urgent need to curb rhino poaching in South Africa, the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) has developed a guide to help rhino owners and managers improve security and thereby prevent rhino poaching on their properties. It also aims to contribute to improved conviction rates for poaching and related offences. |

Abraham Ramonwana, head guide at Tuli Safari Lodge says: “if a mine develops in South Africa, it’s also going to affect Botswana and Zimbabwe”. The authorisation given to an Australian company called Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) to construct an open-cast and underground coal mine, called the Vele Colliery, just outside of the boundaries of the Mapungubwe National Park will affect this fragile natural harmony.
