Business and Biodiversity Forum - First time in Europe!

The Forum in Helsinki will be the fifth CBD Business and Biodiversity Forum. The Forum is part of UN´sConvention of Biological Diversity (CBD) business sector cooperation initiative that supports biodiversity. The Forum was held last time in October 2014 in Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea in contact with COP 12 Convention on Biological Biodiversity where it gathered together around 250 sustainability and business experts including company, stakeholder and government representatives. The Forum is brought to Europe for the first time:  the previous Business and Biodiversity Forums have been held in Republic of Korea, Canada, India and Japan.

Business and Biodiversity (B&B) in Finland

The leading Finnish Corporate Responsibility Network FIBS launched Business & Biodiversity programme in 2014 in cooperation with the Ministry of the Environment.  The initiative aims at creating public awareness about biodiversity and its importance, as well as helping companies to manage their own impacts on environment. During the first year, the programme encouraged the companies to identify the key dependencies and impacts on ecosystem services. The programme included both open seminars and workshops, and Master Class training. The latter enabled deepening the understanding of ecosystem services for nine selected companies representing e.g. aggregate business, food industry, energy production and construction sector.

The experiences from the B&B initiative were encouraging: some of the Master Class companies started to re-shape their environmental strategy, some began to communicate more actively on their environmental projects (social media, video clips etc.) and one company continued exploring possible models which could be used in analysing the biodiversity impacts of the production sites. Moreover, few companies continued discussing possible biodiversity related projects with the experts from the Finnish Environment Institute.
